Australia's entire SAS regiment must be disbanded after Brereton report, expert says

Image
An international security specialist has argued the entire Special Air Service regiment must be disbanded after the Brereton report, saying its continued existence will drive terror-recruiting campaigns and undermine future Australian counter-insurgency efforts. Dr Allan Orr, an expert in counter-insurgency who served as a consultant to the Coalition Counter-Insurgency Academy in Iraq during the war, says the failure to take strong steps in response to the Brereton inquiry would also risk placing Australian soldiers in heightened danger during future operations in Muslim nations, and undermine Australia’s standing at international bodies such as the United Nations. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/nov/25/australias-entire-sas-regiment-must-be-disbanded-after-brereton-report-expert-says

MELBOURNE, Australia — The shark attacked on Sunday, when Charles Cernobori, 59 and a father of three, was bodysurfing off Cable Beach in Western Australia. A couple found him, dragged him to the beach and called emergency services. By the time they arrived, it was too late to save Mr. Cernobori. His death was the eighth linked to a shark in Australia this year, the most in nearly a century. The record for shark attacks in a single year was in 1929, which saw nine. In recent decades, the annual average has been one. Read more: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/24/world/australia/shark-attack.html

'No room for abuse but plenty for banter' in Australia-India series: Justin Langer

Image
Verbal abuse won't be tolerated during the series with fierce rivals India, Australia coach Justin Langer said Wednesday, promising his team had moved on from their days of harsh sledging. Previous clashes between the cricketing heavyweights have been marked by bitter rows, and Australian opener David Warner said this week that he expects Virat Kohli's men will try to wind him up during the tour. But Langer said the Australians would keep any exchanges within the spirit of the game. "There's plenty of room for banter, having fun and having that competitive instinct but there's no room for abuse," he told reporters on a conference call.
